File #66: "Following the passing of my dear wife- Bob Mitchell.pdf"

Text

Following the passing of my dear wife, Alma, after 70 gloriously happy years in 2018, I have
devoted my life to the Lord trying to spread His love every day. Alma's three years at the Bangor
Veterans Home had been a caring, loving experience for our whole family.
Within a short period thereafter, I moved into a small cottage on the shore of Pushaw Lake
bounded by my son, Father Scott Mitchell, and his family on one side and grandson, Alex, on
the other. A grandson, Scott Mitchell 2, was winding up Medical school at the University of
Vermont. Now Dr Scott Mitchell, he has given me the opportunity to serve God daily through the
creation of his nonprofit, standwithme.org in 2014. When the pandemic struck, I was already at
work serving the Lord mostly through SWM. Stand With Me provides free pediatric, therapeutic
standing frames for children with cerebral palsy who cannot stand. It enables them to stand up
to an hour several times a day to assist their internal organs to develop normally. 30% of the 17
million worldwide with CP cannot stand. There are children by the thousands in developing
countries in need. Without a stander or wheelchair, these children lie on the floor at home
isolated on a mat in a corner.
Here is a brief introduction to Dr. Scott Mitchell's standwithme.org nonprofit.
It is a Mitchell family affair. Dr .Mitchell's grandmother, Alma, was a foreign language
college major that included heavy Spanish. For years as she and Grandpa traveled, they
often delighted in month long stays in Spain, the Canary Islands and the lovely Spanish
island of Majorca. His Mom, Dad, Grandpa Mitchell and two Mitchell Aunts participate
actively with God's guidance and love in making things flow and prosper. It is a labor of
family love for us all!
Dr. Mitchell's medical life to be began at age 10 when for whatever reason he decided
he wanted to be a neurosurgeon. At 14, he spent the summer in Spain and returned
fluent in the language. At 15, he applied as a summer Spanish interpreter with Medical
Ministry International for a mission to Ecuador and was accepted reluctantly because of
age only after one of the five interpreters had to drop out. Scott turned out to be the
interpreter of preference. With that start, he interpreted in succeeding years on missions
to Ecuador, 3 to the Dominican Republic and a full summer in Peru as an
intern/interpreter. It was through Peru that Stand With Me was born at Dartmouth in
2014.
Our standwithme.org GuideStar GOLD Christian nonprofit website tells much about Dr. Scott
Mitchell's creation. Please examine it in detail. From Glenburn, Maine, he was a dual college
student graduating from Bowdoin with a Biochemistry degree with a minor in Chinese followed
by a Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering degree. Dartmouth offered him a free doctorate
program in the latter, but he wanted medicine and declined with humility. He became an MD
from the University of Vermont and currently is a neurosurgery resident at Indiana University
Hospital in Indianapolis.
Having given up driving in 2019, my Covid 19 days remained the same. I work at my computer
attempting to set up one man shops in developing countries to make the free low cost frames.
Materials, all available locally worldwide, cost just $40. So far, we have given over 1200 free
frames to children and clinics in Guatemala, Peru, Honduras, Belize, China, North Korea,
Vietnam and Zambia. A new shop in Peru has begun making. Nepal just made their first two
with Vietnam on the brink! God is good.
When not at the computer, I have been able to attend Zoom church twice weekly at my son's
Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Brewer where he is rector. I have been able to maintain

contact with friends via email, phone and Facebook. My three dear children make contact
several times each week. God has protected our whole family from the Corona virus. The VA
has recently administered the two vaccine shots to me. I am looking forward to being able to exit
my cottage a bit more and to attend church once again soon!
And with it all, the Bangor Public Library has kept me reading without let up with the mystery
and suspense novels my wife and I have always enjoyed! The pickup program has been such a
blessing! Thank you all so much!
Thankfully, the pandemic changed my life little. I have been grateful to my daughter in law for
shopping for me during this period and to God for helping me to spread His love while so many
were suffering. We have made progress with God's help to serve more children in need with the
standers they so desperately need. The Lord has blessed us with His love as we also have tried
to do the same. We are so grateful.
Love and blessings.
